Having explored representational work in different media, I wondered, “Is it possible to replicate animal skulls using Pate’ de Verre?” Why re-create something that was perfectly made in nature? Initially, I wanted to do it because of the technical challenge it presented, but this process grew into an examination of how the life of one being can impact another.
By using Pate’ de Verre, I can achieve a more realistic rendering than can be accomplished with other glass techniques. My recent journey is best understood when viewing these skulls side-by-side. “Small Pronghorn” (right) was made first, then “Red Deer from Scotland”, and finally “American Pronghorn”.
Countless hours, failed experiments, dogged determination, and finally success have paid off with the results shown in these three pieces. These photos document the progression in difficulty and size for replicating animal skulls in glass. The technical knowledge that I gained through completing these pieces will provide a solid base for creating future work using this process. These skulls are made using my unique Patè de Verre (glass paste) method that allows natural objects to be re-created with realistic detail.
